A troublesome affliction, acne affects not only your skin; more often than not acne affects your self-esteem, your social life, and your mood. But certain foods and diets appear to be beneficial in reducing and sometimes healing your acne.
Dear Bethany,
I have serious acne. I'm a teenager, and I've heard it's normal for my age... but mine is worse than normal. I'm seeing a doctor, and he has given me prescription after prescription and they don't seem to help as much as I want them to. I need help... I hate the way I look - I feel like I have a disease!

Dear Scarred,
I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with acne. While it is common for teens to have acne, some people struggle with acne skin throughout their adult years also and are genetically pre-disposed to have problems with acne. Some people say it's caused by stress, but regardless of the reason, this affliction can be a rather traumatic one if left untreated... our appearance, as we all know, can have such a pertinent effect on our confidence, or lack thereof. It's certainly no rarity to be tormented by acne, but you should never let this skin disease get the best of you. It's time to stand up tall, take control, and demand your life back with acne treatment. With the oodles of resources at our disposal, there's no reason why you can't strive to be acne free. While proper skin care and reliable treatments are crucial in getting rid of blemishes, there are other things that could help fill in the gaps that skin care and prescriptions can't fill.
You may or may not have come across the subject of acne diets. This pertains to what you consume and how it affects your skin. I recall a story of a man who was sitting in the doctor's office with his wife. She was there for a back pain assessment. He had severely chapped lips at the time and asked her if she had some lip balm in her purse. The doctor looked at him with a smirk and said, "You know, the condition of your lips actually relates to your diet." Huh? She informed him that consuming the proper nutrients and fluids on a regular basis would prevent his lips from being chapped. This baffled him. However, he adopted a more nutritious diet and what do you know? He never has chapped lips anymore. It's bizarre how some things work.
This concept also applies to our skin. Did you know that the food you eat excretes back through your pores? Well, substances from them do anyway. This gives whole new meaning to the phrase, you are what you eat. Skin diets are not unheard of, and this is why acne diets may be important for some individuals. Foods high in fat and grease are known for causing breakouts. I'm talking about fast foods, especially.
Most people think of diet foods as low-fat, bland foods and diet supplements. When it comes to acne diets, foods that are great for your skin system include, fruits and vegetables, organic products, non-processed items, low sugar foods, and of course water. I highly recommend that you give an acne diet a shot - one should certainly better your complexion if you stick to it.
